Loving a Life of Grace, Gratitude, and New Beginnings at Sierra Winds
When Dina arrived in America at just 17 years old, she carried little more than determination and a promise to make the most of her new life. Nearly 75 years later, she looks back with pride on a journey that began in a small Greek village and led her to family, career success, and now a warm, welcoming home at Sierra Winds.
From Greece to the American Dream
Dina was born and raised in the small Greek town of Erateini, where she spent her childhood until, at the age of 17, she made the bold journey to the United States. In July 1952, sponsored by her uncle, she arrived in Michigan ready to start fresh. “My uncle took everything upon himself and took care of me until I grew up,” she recalls.
America quickly became home. Within five years, she proudly became a U.S. citizen – a moment she still cherishes. “The man who interviewed me said I was going to make a good citizen,” Dina smiles. “I learned to speak, read, and write English. I love it here.”
A Career Built on Kindness and Numbers
After learning English through night school, Dina worked a series of jobs in Detroit. Her first job was at a friend’s dry cleaners, then helping at her family’s restaurant. But it was her love of math that set her on her lifelong career path.
One day, a regular customer, the manager of a local bank, encouraged her to apply for a teller position. She excelled, eventually becoming head teller. Later, when she moved to Arizona, she would find a new bank home she loved just as much, managing eight employees. “I was so happy in the bank,” she says. “It was my calling.”
Family, Love, and Legacy
Along the way, Dina raised her son on her own and beams with pride when she speaks of him. He gave her six grandchildren, who visit often and even traveled to celebrate her 90th birthday with her.
In 1991, she remarried, calling her second husband “the most wonderful man on earth” and remembering fondly the 27 years they shared together. “He treated me like a queen,” she says with a smile.
Over the years, Dina found joy in cooking — she’s especially proud of her baklava — as well as embroidery and staying active in her church community. These days, she enjoys playing rummy cube with friends and soaking in the lively atmosphere at Sierra Winds.
Living Her Destiny
Dina moved to Sierra Winds in March 2025 and felt at home right away. “Amber was wonderful. She made everything fall into place,” Dina says of her move-in experience.
She also appreciates the thoughtfulness of the design and services. “I don’t have to go outside in the heat or bad weather to eat or get care,” she notes. “Everything I need is right here. The people are wonderful, the food is good, and there’s always something to do. It’s an absolutely beautiful place to live.”
As she reflects on her life, Dina recalls something her mother used to say: “Everything is written on your forehead.” As a little girl, she would run to the mirror to check. Today, she smiles at the memory, understanding what her mother meant: that our lives are filled with destiny, written long before us.
